Senegal Parrots

Are those the big red birds? Or the big blue birds?

No. And they aren't the big white fluffy birds either. Senegal parrots don't get as much publicity or notority as macaws (those blue ones) and some of the other louder and bigger birds. Perhaps this is because they aren't such gluttons for attention the way that cockatoos (fluffy & white) are and much happier hanging out in shadows the the flashier looking birds.

Senegals are a type of Poicephalus parrot. They originated in Africa. Other types of Poicephalus include the Jardine, Meyers, and Red Bellied Parrot. I have been told that they are distantly related to African Greys, but I suspect that this is mainly because they are from the same continent.

They tend to be quiet and their talking skills are minimal at best. However, I have been told that some will develop a small, limited vocabulary. Their communication skills tend to run more towards whistles, clicks, and chatter.

Their plumage is green with a grey head (hood) and light yellowy-green epaulette feathers on their shoulders. They have orange and yellow under-bellies and thighs. Their feet and beaks are dark grey. As babies, their eyes are greyish blue, but as they advance in age will turn bright golden. They have an approximate thirty year life expectancy.
