Prema Journal #2
Well, Prema has managed to survive being removed from the petstore and brought home. She seems to be pretty well settled into her new cage and home and has even managed a 2 1/2 hour car trip down south to visit her grandparents and aunt. Everyone but my mother's baby schnauzer, Maggie, seemed to love her.

Maggie spent much visit shaking and cowering in a corner of the house as far from Prema as possible. It was quite a sight to see a dog fleeing from a nine inch long bird who didn't even scream! According to reports from my mom, Maggie has since recovered from a her bad case of the nerves and is doing fine.
Prema has been difficult for me to get accustomed to because she is rather quiet and subdued. My past personal experience with parrots has centered largely around Pico, a Nanday Conure. As much as a normal human would find a Nanday's screams painful and impossible, I am quite used to this loud personality and the signals of happiness, contentment, and annoyance. With Prema, I am often confused as to whether she is enjoying being pet or handled, whether she likes or dislikes the food I am offering her, or whether she is tired or annoyed. This is emotionally difficult for me to handle since I want her to be happy and to bond with me.
So far I have seemed to determine that she enjoys chewing on wood and books, eating grapes, carrots, cooked sweet potatoes, popcorn, and nibbling on ears. She also seems to respond to deeper voices and tends to like my friend Jason more than I. She also wants to be top bird at every possible moment and is a definite corporate climber. Loud noises scare the heck out of her and will knock her off her perch.
